Grace Snell Middle School Student Attire
|
|
Based on overwhelming parental, faculty and staff support, our school has adopted a student dress code. The following student attire is expected for all students:
Students are expected to dress in school spirit wear daily. The spirit wear attire meets the required Grace Snell Middle School student dress code. The Comet attire for boys is khaki or blue/black pants, jeans (no rips or holes) or shorts (no shorter than 2 inches above the top of the knee) that meet the student dress requirement for condition and fit, with white or blue collared polo style shirts. The Comet attire for girls is khaki or blue/black pants, skirts, shorts (no shorter than 2 inches above the top of the knee) or capris that meet the dress requirement for condition and fit, with white or blue collared polo style shirts.
Shorts, skirts and dresses
Shorts, skirts and dresses should always be no shorter than 2 inches above the top of the knee. Slits in skirts/dresses cannot be more than 2 inches above the top of the knee. Waistlines of shorts/skirts/pants must be on or above the hips with no underwear showing. Clothing that exposes any portion of the waist, hips or midriff may not be worn to school.
Girl’s blouses and boys shirts
All shirts have a collar; solid color polo style shirts are the accepted style for the Grace Snell Student Dress Code. White or blue solid colored polo style collared shirts are recommended.
Headgear
Headgear is prohibited and must be kept out of sight in the building. This includes, but is not limited to: caps, sock caps, hats, birthday tiaras, hoods, bandanas, wave caps, sweatbands, headbands, sunglasses, or other head coverings. Pants
Pants should not be “sagging” or below waistline or exposing underwear/gym wear. Belts should be worn. Here are some quick checks to make sure your pants are OK:
- Waistline must be on or above hips with no underwear showing at any time.
- Pants that are too baggy and cannot be kept at the waist are not allowed.
- If the crotch of the pants is anywhere near your knees - they are too baggy and do not fit properly for the school environment.
- There should be no rips or holes in jeans, shorts, dresses, or skirts.
- Pajama bottoms are not allowed at school.
- Writing across the seat area is not allowed.
- Undergarments should never be visible.
- Solid color khaki or blue/black pants/jeans are recommended.

Clothing that has references to sex, drugs, or alcohol should not appear on clothing.
No words, symbols, or artwork that advocates or depicts violence or that is inflammatory or suggestive of drugs, alcohol, tobacco products, sex, illegal gang affiliation, hate groups, or other illegal activity should be expressed or implied. No student clothing shall be disruptive or have caused past disruption to the school environment.
Jewelry and accessories may not be spiked.
Accessories or jewelry that may pose a danger is not allowed to be worn at school. This includes, but is not limited to: wallet chains, spiked rings, spiked bracelets, two or three finger rings that are joined, and bulky chains worn around the neck or waist. Sharp objects that could pose a danger, such as spikes or safety pins are not allowed on clothing or book bags; no spiked piercing on face, tongue, ears, etc. is allowed.
No gang-related clothing or symbols.
Students are not allowed to display clothing or symbols that have been identified by the Gwinnett County Police Gang Taskforce as being commonly identified with gangs. Garments, jewelry, body art and tattoos that communicate gang allegiance are not allowed to be worn at school, and no item may be worn in a manner that communicates gang affiliation.
Gang–related attire includes, but is not limited to:
• Sagging pants
• Pants with one leg rolled up
• Long, bulky chains/necklaces
• Clothing with Old English script
• Over-sized pendants
• Bandanas/scarves
• Sweatbands/headbands
• Draping articles of clothing, towels, etc. out of pants pocket, or over the shoulder, etc.
This rule is subject to updates as additional wearing apparel is identified as gang-affiliated or disruptive. The GSMS web site may be consulted for additional changes.
What happens if I wear something that does not meet the Grace Snell Middle School student dress code?
Every morning homeroom teachers will check students’ attire to make sure it adheres to the required GSMS Student Dress Code. If students are not properly dressed for school they will be referred to the grade level assistant principal.
Students may call his/her parent to bring a change of GSMS approved attire, or the student may change into an appropriate shirt and pants that will be provided by the school. The student’s clothing will be locked in the grade level office until school clothes are returned washed and folded by the next day.
